Journeys
BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Hugh Brunt - Royal Concert Hall
Program Info: Sit back and enjoy a selection of short original silent films with accompanying bespoke scores, created by talented students from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and The University of Nottingham (UoN), performed by members of the BBC Concert Orchestra and conducted by Hugh Brunt.
Echoing South: Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Glorious Epic of the Antarctic, the students’ creations were inspired by the theme of journeys, and produced collaboratively by Filmmaking, Animation, Graphic Design, and Illustration students from NTU, and Music Composition students from UoN.
A record of one of the greatest survival stories in the history of exploration, South is the original film, exquisitely photographed by pioneering photographer and film-maker Frank Hurley, of Shackleton’s 1914-16 expedition to Antarctica, during which the ship, Endurance, was crushed by ice, stranding the crew.
Now considered the world’s first documentary feature, South is screened with a newly commissioned score by Neil Brand, performed live by members of the BBC Concert Orchestra with conductor Hugh Brunt.
Afterwards, Journeys: a free showcase of film and music created by the filmmakers of tomorrow, students from the Nottingham universities.
