The Planets & Star Wars
Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alpesh Chauhan - Carl Nielsen Salen, Odense Koncerthus
Program Info: György Ligeti - Atmosphères John Williams - Star Wars Suite Gustav Holst - Planeterne Colin Matthews - Pluto, the Renewer
Join us on an unparalleled musical space adventure as the Odense Symphony Orchestra explores known and unknown galaxies in a gigantic program with a very large range. Gustav Holst's The Planets is a symphonic masterpiece that requires considerable instrumental muscle to realize, and the 7 movements that encapsulate the essence of the planets in our solar system are followed by Colin Matthews' addition: Pluto - despite the fact that we can no longer call it a planet. Ligeti's Atmosphères is the sound of being stretched out in space with no way out - and that's what Stanley Kubrick heard when he catapulted the piece to world fame as an invisible and eerie co-star in his groundbreaking film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
But there are also good melodies and intergalactic love out there in the dark space, at least if you ask John Williams, who with his landmark music for the Star Wars films set completely new standards for how iconic film music could become. And he proves that it is far more than just film music from the very first, goosebump-inducing chord: it is compositional and musical craftsmanship of the finest calibre – music that has rightfully become a classic in concert halls around the world.
