18 January 2025 Warszawa (Warsaw) (Poland)
Carnival concert
Polska Orkiestra Sinfonia Iuventus conducted by Stathis Karapanos - Studio Koncertowe Polskiego Radia im. Witolda Lutosławskiego w Warszawie
Program Info: William Tell is a semi-legendary Swiss hero from the early 14th century, remembered for his opposition to tyranny. His story became the basis for literary works, as well as the last opera by Gioachino Rossini composed for Paris in 1829. The striking, illustrative overture to this work, one of the most beloved symphonic miniatures, is often performed independently.
After retiring from opera life, Rossini created, among others, the playful piano cycle Péchés de vieillesse ("Sins of Old Age"), and the pieces contained therein served as the basis for the ballet La Boutique fantasque performed (1919) in London, choreographed by Léonide Massine. The colorful orchestration was made (and later composed ballet music in the form of a suite) by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, who remained faithful to the neo-romantic musical language in the era of aesthetic changes at the beginning of the 20th century.
