HighScore – Games in Concert
ORSOphilharmonic - Konzerthaus Freiburg
Program Info: Games have long since ceased to be accompanied by simple melodies from clattering Gameboys. The computer gaming industry has undergone remarkable development in the last few decades. It's not just graphics and gameplay that have developed rapidly: the quality standards for sound, synchronisation and music in computer games have grown enormously in recent years and can now easily compete with Hollywood. Renowned composers and orchestras are hired to compose and record original and comprehensive scores. The music becomes an independent work of art that also finds recognition outside of the gaming world. Music is a central part of the gaming experience, contributing significantly to immersion. It's not just background noise, but a powerful element that immerses players in the game's world and helps them build a deeper connection with the characters and plot. Musically, the game scores have long been able to keep up with the classics of film music, but while John Williams regularly fills stadiums, computer game concerts have so far had a rather niche existence.
Reason enough for Wolfgang Roese to dedicate his own concert program to game music: “I've had it in the back of my mind for a long time that I wanted to take on the computer game scene, but I've only now found the time to deal with it and the deeper I delve into the research “The more I am surprised at how little attention the music has received so far.”
