14 April 2025 San Diego (California, USA)
The Mark of Zorro (1920)
Ken Double, organ - Balboa Theatre
Program Info: In this well-known silent film, renowned actor Douglas Fairbanks plays Don Diego Vega, a seemingly foolish and frivolous son of a wealthy landowner in colonial Spanish California. What his peers don't know is - he is the masked hero SeƱor Zorro, who defends his community from the corrupt and cruel Governor Alvarado. Zorro toys with his foes, using his expert fencing skills to carve the letter Z as a marker of his work. The beautiful Lolita Pulido is in love with Zorro, but rejects the advances of Don Diego Vega until all is revealed!
The film was added to the United States National Film Registry in 2015.
This event will feature musical accompaniment by Ken Double on our Wonder Morton Theatre Organ, using the organ's whimsical sounds to bring the story to life!
Fun Fact: In a way, Zorro was Batman before Batman was Batman! The character was a major influence on the Batman comics, and in some iterations of Bruce Wayne's origin story, the Wayne family was walking home from a screening of the film when Bruce's parents were murdered.
