Program Info:
What happens to the film heritage of countries that cease to exist? Is there any place for it within the traditional narrative of film history, which is designed around nationalist histories?

By the end of the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire became embroiled in various conflicts and ultimately fell apart in 1923. Western filmmakers visited Constantinople (now Istanbul) starting in 1896 to capture everyday life for the rest of the world. This footage is now spread across archives worldwide and is often only used for short clips in documentaries, if it has been properly archived at all.

The archival project The Views of the Ottoman Empire started in 2014, bringing together a transnational community of archivists, historians and other specialists exploring the audio-visual cultural heritage from the former Ottoman territories. Every screening shows a different compilation, often including recently discovered and identified material.
