Program Info: John Barry - Dances with Wolves
In 1990, Kevin Costner created a masterpiece with "Dances with Wolves" that won 7 OscarsĀ® - including "Best Film" and "Best Original Score". Experience the western epic as a live world premiere in the KKL Luzern!
30 years ago, Kevin Costner made film history with "Dances with Wolves". No Hollywood studio believed in the success of this western drama about the decline of the Wild West, but Costner was not put off. He put up money from his own pocket and when he couldn't find a director for the film, he sat down in the director's chair himself and made his impressive directorial debut with "Dances with Wolves". The result was a surprise box office hit, and with its breathtakingly beautiful images, sensitive narrative, historical and cultural care, and dreamlike film music by John Barry, the three-hour epic "Dances with Wolves" captivated millions of moviegoers, garnered critical acclaim, and won numerous awards.
The story begins in 1863 in a hospital near a battlefield in Tennessee. The Civil War is raging, and the Union Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is among the countless injured. His leg is to be amputated, but he sneaks out of the hospital, intending instead to meet certain death on the battlefield.
But by a twist of fate, Dunbar helps the Unionists to victory and is celebrated as a hero. Under these circumstances, he receives priority medical treatment, which saves his leg. He is also allowed to choose his next place of deployment, and so John Dunbar decides on Fort Sedgewick, an outpost in the border and Indian country. Once there, he is immersed in a world unknown to him. In solitude, he goes on extensive forays, and soon notices that a wolf is watching him closely. And he meets the Sioux and Pawnee Indians.
Composer John Barry read the script and immediately agreed. Barry: "The war-disabled John Dunbar learns about the beauty of nature and the dignity of the Sioux Indians in the borderland. This is what my music portrays." Barry's distinctively thematic film music overwhelms with great symphonic music and heart-rending intimacy at the same time. He succeeds in creating a heroic and melancholic swan song for the Wild West. "Dances With Wolves" is John Barry's magnum opus and he rightly won his fifth OscarĀ® for it.
Let John Barry's music, played by the City Light Symphony Orchestra, take you to the Wild West and experience the masterpiece "Dances With Wolves" in new splendor.
