«Apollo 13» – in Concert
City Light Symphony Orchestra - KKL

Program Info:

“Apollo 13” tells of one of the most exciting and exciting missions in the history of the American space program. Directed by Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton portray astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, who were selected to fly NASA's third moon landing. The visually stunning 1995 drama received nine Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Score.

During the flight to the moon - 55 hours and 54 minutes after launch and over 300,000 km from Earth - an explosion on board Apollo 13 causes a critical system failure. Capsuleer Swigert radioed: “Okay Houston, we’ve had a problem here.” This forces the control center in Houston to abort the moon landing. While the astronauts have to deal with their dangerous situation and the oxygen and electricity requirements on board the damaged space probe have to be dramatically reduced, flight director Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) and his team try to bring the three men safely back to Earth.

The celebrated composer James Horner was responsible for the music. He has managed to precisely capture the adventurous and majestic character of space travel, the intimidating vastness and strangeness of space, the nerve-racking tension and action as well as the human drama with a multifaceted score - from noble, patriotic brass playing, melancholic Americana, to military percussion to lyrical string passages and a grandiose finale.

On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of this dramatic space mission, experience the classic “Apollo 13” as a moving film-music spectacle, with the fantastic music by James Horner live to the film on the big screen, played by the City Light Symphony Orchestra.
