Film + Music Festival: City Girl (Our daily bread)
Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernd Wilden - Rudolf-Oetker Halle
Program Info: In Murnau's third and final Hollywood film, City Girl , a young woman working in a fast food restaurant falls in love with one of her customers, a young farmer. She moves to the country with him because she hopes to start her real life there. In fact, she arouses the anger of her father-in-law and the covetous envy of the farm workers. Only after a near catastrophe, after the emancipation of her son, her husband, from his father, after her attempt to escape, does a possible happy ending emerge.
To this day, City Girl is overshadowed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's first Hollywood film, "Sunrise" (1927), which won three Oscars. Murnau once again addresses the urban-rural conflict, but now with greater rigor and visual harshness. While Kate's room appears to be a claustrophobic, narrow single cell, Murnau shows the wheat farmer's vast land empty and desolate, marked by the industrialisation of agriculture - a foreshadowing of the dust bowl of the 1930s. The city dwellers' romantic dream of a "real" life in the country turns out to be a nightmare.
Nine years after its acclaimed premiere, this composition by Bernd Wilden will finally be performed again under his direction with the Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestra - a heartfelt wish not only of the orchestra.
