Netherlands Silent Film Festival: Who's that girl
Maud Nelissen (piano) & Elizabeth-Jane Baldry (harp) - Pand P, Grote Zaal

Program Info:
A program dedicated to women in front of and behind the camera who are still unstudied, under-recognised or completely unknown. The program consists of a selection of films made by or about strong, funny, enchanting, artistic and stubborn women: all pioneers of silent film whose cinematographic legacy is not yet fully understood. Who's That Girl? originated from the wonder and curiosity of writer and silent film expert Anke Brouwers and film scholar Kate Saccone.
Compilation of clips from travel and fashion films. +/- 13 minutes

This is a compilation of fragments from beautiful colour films from the Eye Film Museum collection in which various unknown women were brought before the camera, who are either vaguely or not described at all. The compilation contains images of women from all over the world: from France and Japan to Hungary, Croatia and Turkey. Despite their diversity, the fragments invite the following questions: Where did they come from? Who were they? What is their story? Why were they filmed?
Alice and the Fire Department (1926) – 9 minutes

In this short animated film we meet the (live action) Alice (Margie Gay), a firefighter who has to respond when a hotel catches fire. This short was part of Walt Disney's 'Alice Comedies', distributed by Margaret J. Winkler who, in addition to Disney, also supported other animators such as Max and Dave Fleischer, Pat Sullivan, and Otto Messmer. After an anniversary year in which the centenary of the Walt Disney studio was extensively celebrated, we would like to celebrate the woman who gave this 'struggling artist' his first chances with a distribution contract.
The President's Special (1914) – 12 minutes

American actress Gertrude McCoy saves the furniture in this exciting short drama film produced by the Edison Company. When the person in charge of the railroad switch (who also happens to be her husband) falls asleep on duty, McCoy must do everything he can to prevent disaster. Although less known than many of her contemporaries, McCoy's career as an actress and screenwriter deserves our attention.
Filmens Vovehals (1923) – 9 minutes

This compilation gives us an overview of the most spectacular stunts of the Danish 'serial queen' Emilie Sannom. She was a stuntwoman on and behind the scenes and her sensational career as an actress, screenwriter and daredevil still arouses amazement and awe today.
Justitia (1919) – 47 minutes

In the 1910s, female action heroes could be seen in movie theatres around the world. These female stars were the opposite of delicate or meek: they were adventurous, athletic and fearless. 'Astrea' was Italy's most beloved strong woman. In Justitia she plays a mysterious woman who selflessly works for justice. The film was directed by French comedian Polidor, who provides the film with speed and humour.
Good evening – The Flower Fairy (1906) – 1 minute

The program opens with a very short film by the French film pioneer Alice Guy. A flower fairy writes 'bonsoir' ('good evening') in large coloured letters against a black background. There is actually no one more qualified to welcome us than Guy. The original – varied, surprising, versatile – films by the world's first (known) female director are still less known than work by her male contemporaries.
