310 days of shooting, 36,000 extras, 200,000 costumes and what was then a gigantic budget of five million Reichsmarks – a universal, timeless theme was translated into images that have lost none of their fascination to this day. ( German Cinematheque)
Like no other film, METROPOLIS represents the heyday of German silent films made in Berlin – Babelsberg. Electricity made things move, made the nights and the asphalt glow. The engine propelled the automobile and the aeroplane, and the skyscraper grew with the elevator. Through the cinematograph, the vision / illusion of a future metropolis was projected on the white walls of the cinema palaces and the people rose from the catacombs and demanded their fair share. A new era was born and is brought to life by the Babylon Orchestra Berlin in old/new splendor on the gold-framed canvas in Babylon, built in 1929.
