New Year’s Concert 2025 – “From the New World”
City Light Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kevin Griffiths - KKL Luzern

Program Info:
In the New Year's Concert 2025, the City Light Symphony Orchestra will take you on a journey to the "New World"!

The first part of the concert evening belongs entirely to the 9th Symphony “From the New World” by Antonín Dvořák. This masterpiece has a timeless pioneering spirit that has lost none of its freshness to this day.

Dvořák traveled to the United States in 1892 to his appointment as director of the National Conservatory of Music of America fulfill . With the 9th Symphony, which was written during his three-year stay in America, the Czech composer created what is probably his most popular symphonic work. The world premiere in December 1893 at Carnegie Hall was enthusiastically celebrated by the New York audience.

In the second part of the concert we will set off a veritable New Year's fireworks display! The fiery “Cuban Overture” by George Gershwin opens.

In John Williams' Suite from the film drama "Lincoln" you can feel the pioneering spirit of the 19th century, from warm Americana sounds to electrifying Fidel passages.

With “West Side Story,” Leonard Bernstein not only created one of the most famous musicals ever, but also a musical monument of the 20th century. After the musical's overwhelming success on Broadway, Bernstein arranged some of the musical's numbers as a suite for orchestra under the title Symphonic Dances from West Side Story . The premiere took place in 1961 - like that of Dvořák's 9th Symphony - by the New York Philharmonic.

We are pleased to be able to give you powerful, lyrical and refreshing sounds for the new year with this program.
