A day at the Proms - Sound of Space
Saarländische Staatsorchester conducted by Matthias Weissenauer - Staatstheater
Program Info: 10 years of “A day at the Proms” - to mark this occasion, the team around drummer Matthias Weißenauer has put together a very special program.
In the anniversary year of the event series, we reach for the stars and ask ourselves: “What does space sound like?” Because not only our popular very British concert series is celebrating its tenth birthday, Gustav Holst, one of the greatest British composers of all time, also has something to celebrate. The current season marks the 150th anniversary of his birthday. Reason enough to erect a monument to the great master in our series.
In his most famous composition, Gustav Holst takes us through the imaginary spheres of space and characterizes the planets - more mythologically than astronomically. But how do other composers imagine space? And doesn’t John William’s “Darth Vader” definitely sound like Gustav Holst’s “Mars”? How does Johann Strauss' “Danube Waltz” fit into space? Can Hans Zimmer's "Dune" keep up with "Star Wars"? Do “Moonraker” and “Moonriver” have something in common?
Join us on a musical journey through the galaxy and far beyond. Look forward to an intergalactic cross-over from classical to film music to swing and pop, always in the rich sound of over a hundred musicians.
Of course, loyal fans don't have to go without their favorite pieces this year either - we'll be at the Royal Albert Hall in time for the finale and we can rock, honk, cry and celebrate in a "very British" way again!
With music from Gustav Holst, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, John Barry, Henry Mancini and others
