Orchestre Philharmonieque de Monte-Carlo conducted by Frank Strobel - Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Salle Garnier
Program Info: Dmitri Shostakovich - La Nouvelle Babylone (1929) Screening of the film by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg
In 1870, French soldiers went to the front, the Parisian bourgeoisie applauded with cries of “To Berlin!” » and continues to live a joyful life. In the “New Babylone” department store it’s sales time. The young saleswoman Louise is invited to the ball by her boss. But the party is cut short because the French army is defeated and the Prussians march on Paris.
The New Babylon is the Paris Commune as once evoked by the men who mounted the barricades of the Russian revolution of 1906. This film, with its incredible rhythm, is the only one which is a cinematographic transcription of the choreography, an extract from Les Deux Griffith orphans, aside. It is constructed like a real ballet, it constantly evokes the colorful scenes, the most expressive, the most passionate, the most full of rhythm of the great ballets which marked the first seasons between 1909 and 1913 of the Russian ballet. It is the dance of death of the Second Empire and the Paris Commune.
