The lexicon of international films characterises Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's last film Taboo as a "fascinating South Sea ballad, a piece of film history" . The poetic film tells of Reri and Matahi, who live happily as young lovers on the South Sea island of Bora-Bora. But suddenly Reri is torn from her dreams: she is appointed a priestess and is therefore taboo for all men, including Matahi. However, the lovers prefer escape to separation and end up on another island, where Matahi works as a pearl diver...
in Germany in the early 1920s with films such as Nosferatu , Faust and The Last Man After Murnau gained fame , he made several films in the USA from 1926 until a falling out with his production company Fox. Murnau then went to the South Seas in the spring of 1929 to with Tabu : the film was only filmed on original locations and with amateur actors. attempt a large, self-financed experiment
Before filming began, Murnau had noted: “We understood that it would take time, persistence, love, hard work and research to recreate the image of paradise that Melville, Stevenson and O'Brien portrayed to the world, to people find those who still have something of the pride and beauty and spirit of their ancestors.”
The music by the award-winning Romanian composer Violeta Dinescu enriches the breathtaking film with exciting sound facets.
In doing so, she avoids any form of superficial folkloristics. The strongly rhythmic dance passages of the first part are reminiscent of early European modernism, with borrowings from Stravinsky, Bartok and Prokofiev. Violeta Dinescu about her music: “Murnau's film Tabu seemed like a piece of music to me. I tried to do justice to my task of writing an accompanying composition by creating an adequate expression for the inner, poetic, even painful sound of the film's narrative. The plot is sometimes paraphrased, sometimes counterpointed.”
