Günter A. Buchwald (Piano, Violin) & Frank Bockius (drums, percussion - Arkadenhof der Universität Bonn

Program Info:
On a train journey, the aging nobleman Don Mateo meets the young dancer Conchita, whom he defends in a quarrel with another train passenger. Don Mateo soon develops a crush on Conchita, which she cleverly exploits through pretenses and mind games. LA FEMME ET LE PANTIN impresses above all with the performance of the main actress Conchita Montenegro and its sophisticated appearance. The novel by Pierre Louÿs has been filmed several times and served, among other things, as a basis for Luis Buñuel's last film, THIS OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE (1977).

The ageing aristocrat Don Mateo meets Conchita, a young dancer, on a train journey and defends her during a heated quarrel with another passenger. Don Mateo soon becomes smitten with Conchita, which she skilfully exploits through deception and mind games. THE WOMAN AND THE PUPPET impresses above all with the performance of its lead actress Conchita Montenegro and its stylish look. The novel of the same name by Pierre Louÿs has been adapted for the screen several times and served, among other things, as the basis for Luis Buñuel's final film,THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE (1977).

If you go to a woman, have infinite patience with you, because it could be that she plays cruelly with you. Maybe it's also necessary to bring the whip with you, because it's understandable that even a mature man obsessed with love can feel angry if, after two thousand and several meters of film, he isn't given what he wants. But when you go to the cinema, remember that even a very dubious title can still be a good film. This almost says everything that needs to be said about this film set in Spain, in which “beautiful” photography was consciously preferred. The racy Conchita Montenegro plays the spirited woman who finds pleasure in tormenting the man who loves her. With noble composure and restrained enthusiasm, Raymond Destac plays the man blinded by love. But a liberating sigh of relief goes through the rows of spectators when he pulls himself together and proves to the little witch by resounding slaps in the face that he still has something to say. The fact that she then vows to improve things is irrelevant, because we don't know whether she will keep her promise.
