Internationale Stummfilmtage: Alice auf dem Meeresgrund
Meg Morley, piano - Arkadenhof der Universität Bonn

Program Info:
Before inventing Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney had his first success with the ALICE COMEDIES (1924-1927). With the help of a combination of live action and animation technology that is still astonishingly impressive today, the main character - a young, enterprising girl named Alice - experiences a series of funny adventures in a cartoon world. In this first film in the series, Alice meets an old sailor who inspires her imagination with his adventurous stories. Thanks to their absurd, almost surrealistic humor, the ALICE COMEDIES enchant both children and adults.

Before he created Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney had his first success with the ALICE COMEDIES (1924-1927).Using a combination of live-action and animation that is still stunningly impressive today, the main character – a plucky young girl named Alice – has a series of hilarious adventures in a cartoon world. In this first film in the series, Alice meets an old sailor whose ripping yarns spark her imagination. The ALICE COMEDIES delight children and adults alike with their absurd, almost surreal humour.

From a tiny office that Walt and his brother Roy rented at 4651 Kingswell Avenue, Disney single-handedly wrote, drew and animated his first Hollywood production, ALICE'S DAY AT SEA. The film set the stage for the rest of the series within that first season. ALICE'S DAY AT SEA is a combination of live action and animated sequences and begins and ends with Alice and her dog enthusiastically listening to the stories of an old sailor. Eventually they fall into a cartoon dream world where the heroine interacts with animated fish and other underwater animals.

The Alice films are beginner films in every sense, witty and often charming, and they provided Walt Disney with a storehouse of gags, plot ideas and supporting characters that he reintroduced and refined in his famous short films of the 1930s. When Disney and his staff developed a cast of cartoon characters for Alice, they drew on Buster Keaton and Felix the Cat, Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino, Tom Mix and the film THE BIGPARADE 1925, directed by King Vidor).
