Internationale Stummfilmtage: Haltlose Frauen / Unsteady women
Richard Siedhoff (Piano) - Arkadenhof der Universität Bonn

Program Info:
A classic slapstick comedy from Hal Roach Studios, which was - not without reason - called the "laugh factory of the world": the neglected wife of an artist, with the help of her servant and an inexperienced craftsman, stages his supposed infidelity in order to make her husband jealous and to rekindle the sparks of their love. Although SLIPPING WIVES was intended to serve as a vehicle for comedienne Priscilla Dean, the star is outshone by two supporting actors who would soon become one of the most famous and beloved comedy couples: Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

A classic slapstick comedy made by Hal Roach Studios, which was – with good reason – called the "Laugh Factory to the World": The neglected wife of an artist stages a pretend infidelity with the help of her servant and a clueless handyman inorder to make her husband jealous and rekindle the flames of their love. Although SLIPPING WIVES was intended as a vehicle for comedienne Priscilla Dean, the star is overshadowed by two supporting actors who would soon go on to become one of the most famous and popular comedic teams of all time: Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

They didn't go so far [in 1929 at Ufa] as to pass off the film HOUSE FRIEND ON PROBE, which was atypical for the duo, as a thick and stupid film. In the German intertitles, Laurel and Hardy were assigned to their roles in the same way as all the other actors. The story of the film is not particularly original. In the original and in the German version, Laurel is Ferdinand Flamingo and comes as a delivery person to the house of a painter whose wife feels neglected in favor of his painting. Hardy plays the couple's butler.

Laurel and Hardy certainly wouldn't have become famous with HOUSE FRIEND ON PROBATION. However, thanks to Laurel and Hardy's success in Germany, this grotesque sold reasonably well, even if only adults were allowed to see it. No matter how corny the story was, again it was about adultery, and that was something that had to be kept away from young people at all costs.

Norbert Aping: The Fat and Stupid Book, Marburg 200 4

Not one, but two well-known stars of feature productions are offered by Hal Roach in the cast of this two-reeler, Priscilla Dean and Herbert Rawlinson, with several of the familiar Roach comedians in support, making this an exceptional aggregation even for a Hal Roach comedy. The presence of the stars together with the good word of the supporting players, plus amusing situations and gags should make this a good attraction for any type of audience. Miss Dean is cast as a wife who is losing her husband’s love. She hires another man to make love to her and between this and the fact that he mistakes another friend for the real husband, he manages to ball everything up for the merriment of the spectator. In the main it is farce comedy although Stan Laurel in the role of the paid lover introduces considerable slapstick.
