THE HERO OF THE RIVER
Cineuropa's annual meeting with the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia comes this year with the help of Steamboat Bill Jr. (in Galician translated as O heroe do río), the 1928 film directed by Charles Reisner and Buster Keaton, who also starred in it. For this silent comedy, the director and composer Timothy Brock wrote, in 2003, a soundtrack in which he walks through the irony, sweetness and extravagance of the film, through an orchestral work full of nuances. As the composer himself states, composing music for Keaton requires thinking a lot about the narrative relationship between the scene and the music, in terms of synchrony and musical colours, but it also requires knowing how to laugh... as happened to Shostakovich, a great composer for cinema, in 1926 when, accompanying a Chaplin film on the piano, he couldn't stifle a loud laugh, earning his thunderous dismissal.
