Program Info: John Corigliano - The Red Violin A film by François Girard (director) with music by John Corigliano (1998)
John Corigliano's score won an Oscar at the 2000 Academy Awards. The episodic film tells the eventful, often tragic story spanning centuries of a violin and its owners, who are drawn under a magical spell by it. In 17th century Italy, a violin maker is close to completing a perfect violin. When his beloved wife dies at the same time, he continues his life's work in pain and, as a sign of his love, creates an instrument that has a very special appeal. Anyone who has heard the violin will remain in love with it forever - to this day.
