Where better to see a classic film like The Most Dangerous Game than in a monumental church? On Wednesday evening, September 11, St. Jacob's Church provides the ultimate backdrop for this beautiful film classic from 1932 with musical accompaniment from the James Whale Orchestra.
In this influential adventure classic, an evil count hunts down castaways on a remote island. Premiere of the James Whale Orchestra's new film concert, based on the original score by Max Steiner.
Big game hunter Bob Rainsford is the only survivor of a shipwreck. On the island that he manages to reach by swimming, an even tougher test awaits him. There, a certain Count Zaroff enjoys himself hunting for... castaways. Together with Eve, another victim of the Count, Bob flees into the jungle. With the only weapon: his own ingenuity.
The Most Dangerous Game is widely regarded as the founder of a genre that has maintained its popularity to this day; think, for example, of the popular film series The Hunger Games. The spectacular sets would later be reused for King Kong, while a significant part of the cast and crew also contributed to both adventure classics. Film by the Sea has premiered the special screening with live music by the James Whale Orchestra (last year at Film by the Sea with Blackmail) and the Amsterdam Brass Quartet, which put the original score by composer Max Steiner in a surprising new arrangement.
