Program Info: Carl Davis - Ben-Hur
Ben-Hur silent film | USA 1925 Director: Fred Niblo Music: Carl Davis (Neucomposition 1987)
Wherever it says "Ben Hur" has always been ignored - this was also the case with this monumental film from 1925, which went down in the MGM annals not only as the biggest silent film hit (including its scandalous origin story), but also as the most expensive film to date. Embedded in the salvation events from the birth of Christ to the crucifixion, "Ben Hur" tells the story of a friendship between the Jew Judah Ben Hur and the Roman Messala, which turns into deadly enmity and ultimately culminates in a brilliant chariot race. In order to give the race as much drama as possible, the producers offered $5,000 in prize money for the winner - a calculation that worked out perfectly. In 1987, Carl Davis created an opulent new composition that pulls out all the sound stops to accompany the exciting action.
