Karl Bartos: Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
Karl Bartos - KKL
This concert has been canceled.
Program Info: Robert Wiene's silent film classic from 1920 with new film music, composed and performed by ex-Kraftwerk musician Karl Bartos
“A big bang of pop culture,” writes the Süddeutsche Zeitung, referring to Karl Barto’s new setting of the silent film classic “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”
Robert Wiene's psychological thriller from 1920 is an absolute classic. “Kraftwerk” legend Karl Bartos worked particularly intensively on this milestone the history of film and tailored a new, experimentally interpreted sound guise. The premiere took place in February 2024, the Süddeutsche Zeitung judged: “A cracker that makes the Alte Oper in Frankfurt tremble.” With his partner Mathias Black, Bartos plays and controls his film music in synchronization with the digitally restored film version in 4K resolution. The most important means of expression is the timeless sound of the orchestra, synthetically produced and electronically modulated. We hear melodies in the Bach tradition of the Baroque era and the pure classical music of Mozart, but also the dissonances of Arnold Schönberg and the metric playing of Igor Stravinsky and Philip Glass. Outside of the classical tradition, there are the folksy bricolage sounds of the fairground barrel organ, lapel tape effects, and sounds that would fit perfectly on a classic-era Kraftwerk album.
