While people had already become accustomed to sound films in 1931, Chaplin continued to use text panels to put the words into the mouth of his true love, a blind flower girl to whom he pretended to be a rich man. Charlie Chaplin was also responsible for the music for this amusing and enchanting fairy tale. Supported by an arranger and a musical director, the director and actor Chaplin presented his first specially composed film music for “City Lights”.
A timeless parable: We think we have to be rich in order to survive before ourselves and others. But only those who are not blind to the beautiful appearance recognise our true essence - that a beautiful life does not only have to do with material wealth.
