The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Ciconia Consort - De Vereeniging

Program Info:
Following in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and Marco Polo, Ciconia presents a musically poetic journey, with a special 'encounter' of Italian, Turkish, Armenian, Azerbaijani and Chinese music.

For centuries, the Silk Road was the most important connection between East and West and an important factor in the exchange of views, ideas and cultures. The western part of the route was formed by the Persian Royal Road in the 5th century BC. The Central Asian part of the route was in use from 115 BC during the Han dynasty. Although the term Silk Road suggests that it was one route, several routes have existed over the centuries.
Not only luxury goods such as silk, satin, diamonds and porcelain were transported, but also paper, rhubarb, peaches, oranges, horses, camels, elephants and gunpowder.

Our musical journey begins in Venice, Italy with the gallant and virtuoso Concerto per archi by the
film composer Nino Rota and makes the crossing to Constantinople with the Gondol Şarkısı, written by Sultan Abdülaziz in Eurasian style. During the journey to the new caravanserai on the route, we imagine ourselves in the desert with traditional Armenian music.

Azerbaijani composer Fikret Amirov grew up with folk music. His father, Meshedi Jamil, was a famous 'khanande' (mugam singer) and tar player. Based on folk traditions from Azerbaijan and the Middle East, Amirov developed a new genre, the symphonic mugam. His Symphony for string orchestra is dedicated to the great Persian 12th-century poet Nizami. The Silk Road ends in
Beijing with the pure Chinese sounds of the Song of the Ch'in, by the living Chinese-American composer Zhou Long.
