Film & Tango
Karolina Mikołajczyk - violin & Iwo Jednocki - accordion - Sala Mieszczańska Ratusza Staromiejskiego

Program Info:
As part of the 28th International Nova Music and Architecture Festival, at the Film and Tango concert, listeners will have the opportunity to listen to songs known from cinema halls in a unique place - the Burgess Hall of the Old Town Hall. The Toruń Symphony Orchestra has hosted there many times, thus combining the beauty of music and architecture.

Duo Karolina Mikołajczyk & Iwo Jednocki is a band that is successful all over the world. The combination of violin and accordion, as well as the musical skills of the artists, delight listeners and critics, which resulted in nominations for the Polityka Passport in 2023 and the Corypheus of Polish Music (Iwo Jednocki). The artists enjoy the recognition of such authorities in the music world as Krzysztof Penderecki and Maxim Vengerov. The duo is popular not only in Poland - they have performed in 25 countries, on 4 continents, including in autumn 2023 in Mexico, Cuba, and again in Carnegie Hall, this time with the legendary Kronos Quartet.

The concert's repertoire will satisfy not only classical music fans, but also cinema enthusiasts. The musicians will play songs used as soundtracks to well-known and popular films. In particular, they will focus on the famous tangos, so fans of more aggressive sounds will also find something for themselves at the concert.
Tango Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel is known primarily from the film Scent of a Woman. The famous dance scene of the young woman and the retired colonel moved so many viewers precisely because of the wonderful music. The song, which begins gently, quickly transforms into passionate sounds that make you dance. The repertoire also included the song The Hollywood Fantasy, which Wojciech Kostrzewa composed especially for Karolina Mikołajczyk and Iwo Jednocki. The three-part work combines the soundtracks of the most famous films. A trained ear will detect melodies among them, including: Pinocchio, Singin' in the Rain, The Pink Panther, The Godfather, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. The songs intertwine with each other, creating a coherent melody that presents the musical history of contemporary cinema.

At the concert, we will also hear the works of Astor Piazzolla, the king of the genre he created - "nuevo tango". These are exquisite pieces not intended for dancing, but for listening. It is therefore not surprising that directors eagerly used his compositions when looking for soundtracks for their films. The duo will perform the song Suite Punta del Este: Introducion, which was the musical background to the film 12 Monkeys, and Oblivion, which serves as the soundtrack to the film Henry IV. You can't miss the famous Libertang. Combined with the lyrical and dark composition of Grace Jones's I've Seen That Face Before, they created the unforgettable atmosphere of the film Frantic.
