West Side Story: Shakespeare at the Cinema
Barcelona Symphonic Band (BMB) conducted by Rafael Agulló - L'Auditori

Program Info:
Theatre’s most universally recognised genius has been transferred to the screen in productions that successfully convey in music the tension and emotions of the plot, played out by disturbingly true to life characters.

Passionate music ranging from Miklós Rózsa’s Julius Caesar to the iconic “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story, based on Romeo and Juliet. Its creator, Leonard Bernstein, was a connoisseur of theatrical resources and an expert on Mahler’s work.

Previous to that, the audience will discover, or recall, the theme tune composed by Nino Rota for the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, which is more in tune with the sensibility of the original period, and the suite from the film Henry V, composed by Patrick Doyle, an ambitious project that Simon Rattle recorded with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Repertoire
Miklós Rózsa: Julius Caesar (1953)
Nino Rota: Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Patrick Doyle: Suite from the film Henry V (1989)
Leonard Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story (1957)
