Surrealist film with a mesmerising score for cellos and bandoneon
Those who previously saw the expressionist Nosferatu will now discover a completely different approach to the vampire genre. Surrealism takes centre stage in the 1932 film Vampyr. Director Dreyer drew inspiration from the ghost stories of Irish writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu. The four cellists of Metrocelli and bandoneonist Martin de Ruiter capture the eerie atmosphere of Dreyer's images in a mesmerising score.
A young man fascinated by the occult travels to the village of Courtempierre, where he begins to experience sinister ghostly visions. The film, shot on location and featuring ingenious special effects, seems to hover between the world of the living and the dead. Dreyer’s use of non-linear storytelling reinforces the feeling of being trapped in a disturbing dream.
