It is already a tradition at the Philharmonic that every year in May we take you to the world of the best film music. Last season it was music from the Star Wars movie , this time on our concert menu: Harry Potter - symphonic suite ! The adventures of the young wizard were told in a total of eight films. The saga became a huge box office success. Films about the adventures of Harry Potter, shot in 2001-2011, earned $7.7 billion worldwide (source: filmweb.pl ).
The suite that will open our concert consists of the most famous musical motifs from Harry Potter films, written by John Williams (born 1932), one of the most famous film music composers in history (56 Oscar nominations, including 5 statuettes), author music for the parts: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone , Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , Patrick Doyle (born 1953), creator of the soundtrack for the parts of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Alexandre Desplat (born 1961), whose music can be heard in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Parts I and II .
After the break, we will return to the world of magic and sorcerers thanks to the next songs. We will hear music from the famous film by the creators of Shrek and Madagascar , which has had three subsequent parts. We are, of course, talking about the famous film How to Train Your Dragon , with music written by John Powell (born 1963). He is also the author of music for almost 70 other films, for which he was nominated several times for a Grammy and an Oscar.
This literally magical evening will end with the symphonic poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice by the French composer Paul Dukas (1865-1935). The work is subtitled Scherzo after Goethe's ballad , because it was inspired by Goethe's poem from 1797 under that title. The plot told in the poem can be briefly summarised as follows: in the absence of the sorcerer, the student wants to test the strength of the acquired magical powers. So he enchants the broom to carry water. The trick works and more water appears. However, when it becomes dangerously high, the student realises that he no longer remembers how to cancel the spell. Terrified that he will inevitably flood the entire house, he splits the broom in half with an axe, which only makes matters worse. Because now two brooms are constantly carrying water. However, everything has a happy ending, as the situation is saved by the sorcerer. It is this funny story that Dukas's piece tells, so it is a work of programmatic music, i.e. with a specific theme. It is also the most famous and most frequently performed work by the French composer. And although it was never written for the big screen, it was used in an animated film by Walt Disney Fantasia from 1940, in which Mickey Mouse himself played the role of the titular student. Thanks to this, the fame of this piece went beyond the walls of concert halls and it became widely known to a wider audience.
On this evening with film music, the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will be led by Maestra Maria Sydor , an excellent young conductor, assistant to the artistic director and chief conductor of the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra.
