Program Info: Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (Paul Wegener, Carl Boese, D, 1920)
SILENT FILM PREMIERE
Silent film with a new soundtrack by M-cine
At its core, the Jewish Golem legend contains man's dream of being a creator and allowing life to emerge from dead matter - life that is also under man's control. In “The Golem, How He Came into the World” (1920), the director and actor Paul Wegener turned this story into a legendary silent film, which is also one of the classics of expressionist and fantastic cinema due to Hans Pölzig's artful film structures and the somnambulistic main character . In the film, which takes place in the 16th century, Rabbi Löw uses mystical practice with the golem to create a willing servant with superhuman strength to save the Jewish community. First of all, it fulfills its purpose and averts the impending danger. However, when he is misused for baser motives, disaster begins. In our present day, in which technology is becoming increasingly autonomous from humans and AI systems are penetrating more and more areas of life, Wegener's "Golem" has lost none of its relevance. Because it raises the question of who bears guilt and responsibility: creation or the creator? As in the twenties, but with today's perspective, Katharina Stashik (saxophone) and Dorothee Haddenbruch (piano) as a duo give M-Cine Wegener's film a new soundtrack that combines classical musical craftsmanship with the freedom of improvisation that the Golem is more likely to have doesn't own.
