Program Info: Antwerp Symphony Orchestra Roderick Cox, conductor Benjamin Beilman, violin
Many Flemish composers were inspired by painting, and so did Flor Alpaerts in his exuberant James Ensor Suite . In this Ensor year, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the Ostend master, to whom sister institution KMSKA is also devoting an exhibition. is Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto peppered with quotes from his best film music. Korngold fled to America in the 1930s, where he became one of the great composers of Hollywood's golden age. The young super talent Benjamin Beilman plays for us the wonderful concerto with folksy, sharp edges that recall Korngold's roots in the Czech Republic of Dvořák and Janáček. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Béla Bartók also fled to America. He composed his Concerto for orchestra there in an intuitive, even 'brutal' style. The various orchestral groups are given a solo role in a dazzling composition with smooth melodies and sophisticated dialogue.
