About the Concert: Award-winning composer, lyricist, orchestrator and musician Marc Shaiman brings his genius to the stage with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in the World Premiere of an evening celebrating his beloved music from TV, film and theater. This variety show-style concert will include stories about his work with such superstars as Martin Short, Whoopi Goldberg, Bette Midler, Billy Crystal and more! Exciting award-winning songs include: "You Can't Stop the Beat" (from his Tony Award-winning show Hairspray), "It Had to be You," "Some Like it Hot," "Let Me be Your Star," "A Wink and a Smile," "I Will Follow Him," "Wind Beneath My Wings" and (from South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut) "Blame Canada". You'll also hear excerpts from some of Shaiman's famous scores from motion pictures: Mary Poppins Returns, City Slickers, The American President, The First Wives Club and Patch Adams. Marc Shaiman has been Oscar-nominated seven times (for Mary Poppins Returns [2 noms], Sleepless in Seattle, Patch Adams, The First Wives Club, The American President and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut). He has received three Tony Award nominations (winning one for writing the music to Hairspray and lyrics with co-lyricist Scott Wittman), five Grammy® Awards nominations (winning two for The Original Cast Recordings of Hairspray and for Some Like it Hot), twelve Emmy Award nominations (winning one for his work on one of Billy Crystal’s Academy Award hosting appearances), four Golden Globe nominations (including The Star, song co-written with Mariah Carey) and two BAFTA nominations (Sleepless In Seattle and Mary Poppins Returns).
Shaiman's film work includes Beaches, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, City Slickers, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, A Few Good Men, Sister Act (1 & 2), George of the Jungle, In and Out, Hocus Pocus, The Bucket List, Parental Guidance and dozens more. He also served as an Executive Producer of the successful film adaptation of his Broadway musical Hairspray.
