The Kid
Orchestre national de Cannes conducted by Benjamin Levy - Palais des Festivals et des Congrès
Program Info: Charles Chaplin - The Kid
Charlie Chaplin's The Kid and his sequences, which have been part of the collective imagination for a century now, will be screened at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes. Enhanced with the original soundtrack that the Cannes Orchestra will bring to life on the eve of the end-of-year celebrations. Treat yourself to an evening with the family and (re)immerse yourself in the tragicomic world of this immense masterpiece of silent cinema.
The tone of the film is established by the first title: “A film with a smile… and perhaps also, a tear”, while another announces the story “The woman whose sin is to be a mother”.
A destitute woman abandons her infant in a luxurious car asking the person who finds it to take care of this child. But the car is stolen by two thugs who separate from it a few streets further. Charlot, a poor glazier passing by, discovers the baby, tries to get rid of this new, unwanted responsibility, but becomes attached to him. He is not at the end of his troubles...
In 1971, 50 years after the film's release, Charlie Chaplin designed the score for The Kid which covers the entire duration of the film. Chaplin partners with composers for the orchestration of his melodic ideas. There are nods to jazz, but also touches of waltz and forays into cabaret, so many different atmospheres to match the emotions released by the images.
