Program Info: Oldenburg State Orchestra Konzert-Chor Braunschweig Hendrik Vestmann, conductor Lev Gelbard, violin
John Corigliano's music oscillates between Hollywood pathos and new ideas. No wonder, his “Red Violin” Concerto (2003) is also a reworking of his film music for the Canadian feature film “The Red Violin” from 1999, for which he won the Oscar.
Holst 's orchestral suite "The Planets", composed between 1914 and 1916, is late romantic program music, the character of which later had a great influence on film music and whose immediate effect on the listener arises primarily from the monumental sound effects and the richness of the orchestra's timbres .
The direct roots of today's Oldenburg State Orchestra go back to 1797. The ensemble, consisting of around 70 musicians, has been part of the Oldenburg State Theater since 1938. In addition to opera and concert events, the focus is on music education with regular children's and family concerts as well as music education offerings.
Born in Moscow, Lev Gelbard studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory there with highest honours, received numerous international awards with his “Moscow String Quartet” and was concert-master of the Oldenburg State Orchestra for many years.
