Luis Enriquez Bacalov (1933–2017) was an Argentine composer who worked in Italy. He gained fame as an author of applied music (in 1994 he won an Oscar for the music for M. Redford’s film “The Postman”), but in his last creative period he turned to creating vocal and symphonic works for choir and orchestra, among which Misa Tango for bandoneon, mezzo-soprano, tenor, mixed choir and orchestra (1997). Outwardly it is a traditional five-part mass, but it is written in Spanish and permeated with tango rhythms. “Tango always sounds in my concerts, even if I play classical music,” said the composer. – As for the Mass... I wrote a lot for Catholic services. And when they commissioned me to do this work, the main thing for me was the idea of one God for everyone - for Muslims, Jews, Catholics. That’s why I combined the two styles.”
The Requiem, written by Karl Jenkins (b. 1944) in 2005 in memory of his father, has gained recognition among listeners around the world in less than 20 years. The secret of the composition's popularity lies in the clarity of the musical language and enlightened lyricism. To the traditional parts of the funeral mass, the author added Pie Jesu and In Paradisum, as well as Japanese haiku. Combining liturgical Latin text and Japanese poetry, the Requiem reveals Western and Eastern views on the eternal theme of life and death.
