What a nightmare: losing both hands as a concert pianist! In this silent film classic, Orlac receives new hands from an executed murderer after an accident. From that moment on, these strange body parts take over him in a gruesome way. To add extra weight to the plot twists, none other than the French master pianist Alexandre Tharaud improvises a live musical score for the film shown on the big screen.
Orlac's Hände from 1924 navigates between psychological horror and crime drama. Director Robert Wiene, known for his groundbreaking Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari , collaborates again with actor Conrad Veidt in this film. Pianist Alexandre Tharaud, artist in focus at the Muziekgebouw in season 23/24, already made a big impression in the Film and Live Music series in 2018 when he accompanied Sunrise by FW Murnau.
