School concert With Britten through the orchestra
Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen conducted by Jascha von der Goltz - Theater St. Gallen, Tonhalle
Program Info: One of the great classics for young ears is Benjamin Britten's sounding orchestral leader. Which instruments play in an orchestra, how do they sound alone and how do they sound when played together with others? And can a composer mix sounds like a painter mixes colours? Yes he can! Benjamin Britten demonstrates this with a theme from a play by his legendary predecessor and 17th-century compatriot, Henry Purcell. He lets the theme wander through the orchestra, sometimes played by a single instrument, sometimes by a whole group, appearing now in this timbre, then again in that timbre. At the very end he puts all the individual pieces together into a great, sounding painting.
Benjamin Britten - The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, opus 34: composed in 1946 to accompany an educational film produced by the British government and featured in the Oscar-nominated film Moonrise Kingdom
