The "New World" Symphony
Orchestre symphonique de Québec conducted by Nodoka Okisawa - Grand Théâtre de Québec, Salle Louis-Fréchette
Program Info: Orchestra Symphony Quebec Nodoka Okisawa, conductor Edgar Moreau, cello
Edgar Moreau, youth at the service of genius
For her first concert at the head of our orchestra, the amazing Japanese conductor Nodoka Okisawa invites us to follow, with a Smetana more romantic than ever, the course of the river which crosses Prague, The Moldau . The young French cellist Edgar Moreau joins her for the splendid Concerto Korngold . The lyrical flights respond to the rhythmic convulsions in this work which, created in Los Angeles in 1946, takes up themes composed for the film Deception with Bette Davis, where a cellist plays the main role in a tragic love story. After the lyrical and poignant depth of the three scenes of Bloch's From Jewish Life , let's return to the United States, where Dvořák spent four years directing the New York Conservatory.
First performed at Carnegie Hall in 1893, his Ninth Symphony , today the composer's best-known piece, was inspired by native songs. Finally, the famous finale lets us imagine the greatness of the feelings once instilled in Europeans by the idea of a New World which, free and disproportionate, remained to be conquered.
