Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal conducted by Patrick Hahn - Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal

Program Info:
Orchestral compositions in Cinemascope: The focal point of the 8th symphony concert is a »stratospheric colossus of sound«, as the writer Henry Miller called Edgar Varèse's orchestral piece »Amériques« with more than 100 musicians. The French composer fled the chaos of World War I to America, where he recorded his first impressions of bustling New York, complete with the ubiquitous police sirens. This work of American modernism is pictorial and associative, which found a kind of continuation in the multiple Oscar-winning soundtracks by John Williams. It is only through them that many of the iconic scenes from Hollywood blockbusters get their haunting emotionality. Not far from the Hollywood dream factory also lived Sergei Rachmaninoff, who spent the last years of his life in a house in Beverly Hills. In its emotional density and pictorial quality, his music certainly shows parallels to film music - for example the 2nd symphony, which almost overflows with voluptuous, flowing melodies. Great symphonic cinema!
