26 July 2024 Basel (Switzerland)
Ritual Groove
Basil Sinfonietta conducted by Titus Engel - Reithalle, Kaserne Basel
Program Info: Basil Sinfonietta Titus Engel, conductor Nik Bärtsch's Mobile: Nik Bärtsch, piano; Sha, alto saxophone and bass clarinet; Nicolas Stocker, drums and percussion Daniel Eaton, Lighting Design
The Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch dispenses with virtuoso capers in his music, which is characterized by rituals, reduction and the appeal of repetition. He draws inspiration from an understanding of time that stems from Zen Buddhism. With his formations, Nik Bärtsch has created a completely unique style of music somewhere between jazz, funk and minimal music.
While he has been appearing with his zen funk group Ronin every Monday at Club Exil in Zurich for almost 15 years and touring through Asia, Europe, North America and Africa, he practices with his acoustic formation Mobile a meditative, tonally and rhythmically highly idiosyncratic «ritual Groove Music», which is now combined for the first time with a large orchestra in his new work, commissioned by the Basel Sinfonietta.
The Icelandic composer and cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir has already won numerous Grammys, Emmys and an Oscar for her film music for the American thriller blockbuster "Joker". Most recently, she caused a sensation with her soundtrack to the Oscar-nominated drama "Tár" about a star conductor and a concertmaster of a large Berlin orchestra (with Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss as the musician couple).
In the first part of this concert evening, the Basel Sinfonietta presents music by Hildur Guðnadóttir from different creative periods: “Ascent” and “Opaque” from her early concept album “Without Sinking” and “Baer” from the album “Saman”. And as a special highlight, the piece "For Petra" from the current feature film "Tár".
