New Year's concert 2024: Film Music Gala
Duisburger Philharmoniker conducted by Axel Kober - Philharmonie Mercatorhalle

Program Info:
Duisburg Philharmonic
Axel Kober, conductor
Chantal Jansen, singer

This year's New Year's concert by the Duisburg Philharmonic is an opulent film gala. The orchestra starts the new year with the great melodies from the Hollywood dream factory - roaring, glittering, full of energy! And they stand in a direct line with the great works of the late Romantic composers: the monumental symphonies of Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler were the inspiration for the often epic film soundtracks, as was the sophisticated instrumentation of Richard Strauss. Not to mention Richard Wagner's leitmotifs, which live on in many Hollywood soundtracks with distinctive themes for specific people, objects or atmospheric situations. Erich Wolfgang Korngold, for example, stands between classical music and film music: in Europe he celebrated success with his opera "Die tote Stadt", after emigrating to the USA he became a sought-after Hollywood composer. In 1939 he received one of two Oscars for the music to "Robin Hood - King of the Drifters" that he was able to win with his soundtracks. John Williams won five Oscars, plus countless nominations, including for the soundtrack to "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". Alan Silvestri, on the other hand, still has to wait for his first Oscar, after all his music for one of the "Avengers" films was nominated for a Grammy. And what would a film music gala be without what is probably the most famous theme song in film history, written for: James Bond? In addition to the classic "Diamonds Are Forever", originally sung by the incomparable Shirley Bassey, the program also includes modern Bond songs by superstar Adele and Billi Eilish - sung by the charismatic Chantal Jansen with her expressive voice.
