Program Info: Brandenburg State Orchestra in Frankfurt Martijn Dendievel, conductor Herbert Schuch, piano
Nobody has evoked the beauties and dangers of the sea more vividly than Benjamin Britten, who grew up on the east coast of England. The interludes at sea in his opera »Peter Grimes« allow us to look deep into the mental abysses of an outsider. Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel were also adept at compositional skills – with »La Mer« one created a masterpiece full of tonal subtlety and wild ecstasy, the other a jazzy, refined keyboard tour de force for the left hand. The soundscapes in Toru Takemitsu's music for the monumental historical film »Ran« (1985) are reminiscent of underwater worlds, unfolding their own spooky life out of the stillness.
