Metropolis
Dresdner Philharmonie conducted by Titus Engel - Konzertsaal im Kulturpalast Dresden
Program Info: Gottfried Huppertz - Metropolis
"Metropolis" is the best-known German silent film. The masterful cinematic implementation of a vision of the future of the modern city is just as fascinating today as it was when it was created 100 years ago. The film takes place in the architecture of the high-tech city of Metropolis. Working class and ruling class live here strictly separated. When the son of the mayor comes into contact with the lower class for the first time, he decides to change the situation. He starts a revolt. The monumental work was shot by Fritz Lang in the Babelsberg film studios in 1925/26. It premiered in 1927. Shortly after the premiere, a version that was shortened by 1,000 meters of film and whose content was falsified was cut. The original was lost. After years of detailed work, it was possible to completely reconstruct the work. This reconstructed version with the original music by Hupperts is being played in our concert hall. Similar to Richard Wagner's operas, numerous leitmotifs show the viewer the way through the film. And he also revives the musical late romanticism in his choice of tonal language – but not exclusively: Huppertz also integrates jazz and machine music into his score, thereby opening up his score to the tonal language of the twentieth century.
In cooperation with the European Film Philharmonic.
