Discovering the orchestra
Orchestre National de Lyon - Auditorium-Orchestre National de Lyon, Grande Salle

Program Info:
Boléro . is very simple music It is even, according to Ravel himself, a kind of non-music in the sense that it is only a gigantic crescendo, built on two themes repeated eighteen times and marked by a haunting rhythm of bolero performed on the snare drum one hundred and sixty-nine times! Ravel's incredible orchestral work made this ballet music a worldwide success. It is this essential masterpiece that will allow young audiences to discover the orchestra and its various desks, its families of instruments, the richness of its timbres, its softness and its power. Britten's piece, conceived as a guided tour of the orchestra, completes this program placed under the sign of the discovery of one of the most marvellous instruments ever invented: the orchestra.

Benjamin Britten - The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, opus 34: composed in 1946 to accompany an educational film produced by the British government and featured in the Oscar-nominated film Moonrise Kingdom
Maurice Ravel - Bolero
