Ciné-concert Faust
Orchestre National de Lyon conducted by Timothy Brock - Auditorium-Orchestre National de Lyon, Grande Salle

Program Info:
Timothy Brock - Faust
Faust, A German Legend by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau
[Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage] Allemagne, 1926, N&B, muet/avec Gösta Ekman Sr., Emil Jannings, Camilla Horn, Yvette Guilbert

Murnau's last German film, who then left for the United States (where he shot L'Aurore in 1927 ), Faust mixes several sources in a great visionary momentum, intermingling pictorial references (Böcklin, Rembrandt, Gustave Doré, etc.) , expressionist chiaroscuros and hints of Wagnerian romanticism. Special effects, sets, lights, the technical perfection of this film fascinated Éric Rohmer, who devoted a long essay to it. Small bonus: it is Yvette Guilbert, the immortal interpreter of Madame Arthur , who plays the role of Marthe. However, she does not lend her voice to the soundtrack: Timothy Brock, who has so often collaborated as a composer and as a conductor in the cine-concerts of the Auditorium-Orchestre national de Lyon, will conduct the score he wrote in 1995 for Murnau's masterpiece.
