Film Music
Musiciens de l’Orchestre de Paris - Philharmonie de Paris, Amphithéâtre - Cité de la musique
Program Info: Film, a popular art that some predicted would replace opera, is also a musical art. Drawing on classical tradition and jazz, spanning Europe and the United States, this programme showcases the seductive charm of film music.
For this concert in homage to the silver screen, a classical string quartet and jazz Quartet share the stage, in a back-and-forth that ultimately becomes a melting pot.
Cinema, one of the great artistic innovations of the 20th century, has forged a fascinating relationship with music involving a host of illustrious figures, including Shostakovich, who collaborated with the director Kozintsev.
Before pursuing his career in Hollywood, still a child prodigy, Korngold composed his Quartet No. 2 infused with lyricism and echoes of Viennese waltzes. Nino Rota, known for his legendary collaboration with Fellini, is also the composer of a masterly Quartet, a work of admirable classical balance.
Gershwin melodies, Miles Davis’ unforgettable accents in Lift to the Scaffold and other brilliant standards make up the programme for this ‘show’ dedicated to the magic of cinema.
Program Works by Dmitri Chostakovitch, George Gershwin, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Nino Rota
