Karl Bartos music, electronics and sound design
Mathias Black sound direction, technical direction

Karl Bartos presents the current composition from his Klangwerkstatt (world premiere, commissioned by the Alte Oper Frankfurt)

Film music isn't exactly the first genre people associate with Karl Bartos. Bartos, that was Kraftwerk, and Kraftwerk were the pioneers of electronic music, the only German group to be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame - at the Kraftwerk performance in the Alte Oper in 1981, just a few weeks after the reopening of the house, some will remember well.
But Karl Bartos has a very special passion. For almost 20 years, the classically trained musician has been working on the first psychological thriller in film history, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”, and is working on tailoring an equally experimental sound robe for the experimental silent film classic. To this end, on behalf of the Alte Oper, he not only created a new continuous level of noise for the moving images, but also an independent musical layer. His means: the timeless sound of the symphony orchestra, synthetically and electronically modulated.
At this world premiere, the 4K version of the film, digitally restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Foundation, meets the level of sounds that are controlled live and synchronously by Karl Bartos and Mathias Black on stage.
