Film+MusikFest Bielefeld: »The Navigator«, Vorfilm »The Blacksmith«
Cinematografisches Orchester conducted by Axel Goldbeck - Rudolf-Oetker-Halle

Program Info:
Axel Goldbeck - »The Navigator«, Vorfilm »The Blacksmith«

The spoiled, unworldly son of a millionaire, Rollo Treadway, spontaneously proposes to his neighbour Betsy O'Brien, who she is determined to refuse. Since he has already planned an ocean voyage for his honeymoon, he has to embark on it alone, to his disappointment. But that's where the misfortune begins: Treadway checks into the wrong ship and suddenly finds himself all alone on a huge ocean cruiser, which is drifting aimlessly on the open sea. To his surprise, his beloved, Betsy, is also on board the Navigator. The ship belongs to her father and their unusual situation is apparently due to enemy spies who want to destroy the ocean liner and have therefore cast off the lines. After initial difficulties, they get used to life on the high seas and finally there is even land to save them in sight. What the couple doesn't know yet: the island is inhabited by hungry cannibals...

In the supporting film, too, director and actor Buster Keaton creates that ravishing chaos that he himself wears with a stoically resigned face and made him one of the most important slapstick comedy directors of early Hollywood. Whether transport ship as in »Navigator«, whether horse, automobiele or random passer-by: nobody escapes the fatal ambition of the poker face – who of course gets the most beautiful girl in the end.

With the specialists for tempo and swing: Axel Goldbeck's cinematographic orchestra.
