Film+MusikFest Bielefeld: Die Carmen von St. Pauli
Natalie Böttcher, accordion - Lichtwerk
Program Info: »When the Hamburg boatswain Klaus Brandt catches a thief in the harbour at night, his downfall is sealed. Because the thief turns out to be a young, attractive girl, and the otherwise dutiful sailor lets her go unmolested. Jenny is the star of a harbour bar and works in league with smugglers. Because of her, Klaus increasingly neglects his duties until he is fired. Completely addicted to Jenny's powers of seduction, he allows himself to be involved in the dark dealings of the »harbour rats« and is even suspected of having murdered a rival with whom he was competing for Jenny's favor...
Star cinema against the background of an authentic working world: Using numerous harbour views, »Die Carmen von St. Pauli« implements the mythical nimbus of a »buccaneer Jenny« in a supposed everyday scenery. Travelling along the edge of the harbour gives the film almost neo-realistic features. Of course, the story of the easy girl among heavy boys lives off the very romance that the film, with a view of Hamburg's famous entertainment district, purports to expose as "made."
