Film+MusikFest Bielefeld: The Lost World (1925)
Metropolis Orchester conducted by Robert Israel - Rudolf-Oetker-Halle

Program Info:
Robert Israel - The lost world

On April 6, 1925, a film is shown on board an airplane for the first time. "The Lost World," an adventure film about the legendary giant lizards who survived in a forgotten region of the Amazon, keeps passengers bored on their flight on an Imperial Airways double-decker from London to Paris. Allo- and brontosaurs, the tyrannosaurus rex and apes populate the imagination not only of children. In the fantasy adventure, the greatest modernity of film technology is superimposed with the imaginary primeval times and their extinct inhabitants.

Eight years before the blockbuster »King Kong and the White Woman«, Willis O'Brien, a pioneer of animation technology, developed groundbreaking special effects for »The Lost World«, which make the science fiction film amazing to this day. It is based on the adventure novel "The Lost World" by Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle, who also appears in the opening scene of the film as himself .

A surprisingly topical point of the script is that the expedition to the dinosaurs is justified by the search for a missing explorer who had been left behind in the Amazon region. The human interest story , which a traveling journalist is writing exclusively for a London magazine, finances the renewed journey of a dinosaur researcher, whose name is no coincidence » Professor Challenger«.
